Guardians, conservators, and payees are appointed to individuals who “lack sufficient understanding or capacity to make or communicate responsible personal decisions, and who have an inability meet person needs for medical care, nutrition, clothing, shelter, or safety.”
Nearly 23,000 adults are under guardianship and conservatorship in Iowa.
Guardians of Northeast Iowa, Inc. currently provides services for 183 individuals – with many that are underfunded.
Guardianship
A court-appointed individual that manages another’s care.
Representative Payee
An individual appointed by the Social Security Administration to manage the SSI benefits for a beneficiary.
Conservatorship
A court-appointed individual that manages another person’s financial matters.
